Chris Hughton, the newly appointed coach of the Black Stars, has spoken out about his decision to leave captain Andre Ayew on the bench during Thursday's game against Angola.
The Black Stars emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, thanks to a last-minute goal from substitute Antoine Semenyo.
Hughton's decision to bench Ayew caused some confusion among fans, but the 64-year-old coach has explained that it was simply a matter of making difficult choices.
"This is the choice you have as a head coach," Hughton said during a post-match conference.
"You know the quality that Andre has, you also know the quality that I like to think the squad have...so these are very difficult decisions for me; certainly nothing to read into that. He is, has been and is still a very good player it was just my choice."
Despite Ayew's absence, Ghana still managed to secure a crucial victory that puts them in first place in Group E of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers with 7 points.
The Black Stars will travel to play the return leg against Angola on Monday, hoping to maintain their lead in the group.
