Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyan has lifted the lid on his penalty miss against Uruguay at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

At the mundial in South Africa, the former Sunderland FC man was a star of the continent as his performance helped the Black Stars to reach the quarter-finals.

In extra time against Uruguay, Ghana was awarded a penalty for a chance to become the first African country to reach the semi-finals of the world cup.

Unfortunately, Asamoah Gyan who stepped up to take the spot-kick could not score.

Speaking to FIFA ahead of this year’s world cup, Asamoah Gyan has explained that he missed the penalty kick because he used the wrong technique.

According to him, the miss still haunts him because he did not only let a country down but the entire continent.

“I was one of the top 3 best players In the world at that time. I was on top of the world, I was confident. A day before the Uruguay game I shot 20 penalties against our goalkeeper at training, I scored all 20. I was going to my left side of the goalkeeper.

“I saw him going to the left. And then I saw him going to my right where I was shooting the bad. He feinted me and then went to where the ball went. I didn’t know how the ball went up. Technically there was something wrong. I didn’t have the right technique,” Asamoah Gyan explained.

The celebrated striker added, “I had to cry because I felt like I came from hero to zero. I let The whole continent, my country down. Anytime I’m in a room it just pops up in my mind. I’m going to live it with for the rest of my life.”

Ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Ghana is in the same group as Uruguay for a chance to get one over the North American side.
