In a recent development, a High Court has rendered a verdict allowing renowned investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas to provide testimony against former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi in an open court setting.
However, Anas will maintain his characteristic anonymity by appearing in court wearing a mask.
Following a formal request made by Nyantakyi's legal team, the court granted them the opportunity to see Anas's unmasked face in a private chamber before the testimony is given.
This ruling pertains to the ongoing criminal trial stemming from the groundbreaking documentary titled 'Number 12: When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm,' which exposed extensive corruption within Ghanaian football circles.
The court underscored the paramount importance of ensuring justice and affording individuals facing potential loss of liberty with adequate resources to mount a robust defense.
Given Anas's pivotal role as a principal witness in the case, his true identity assumes significant relevance in enabling the accused to identify him and effectively present his defense.
The court took note of Anas's prior public appearances where he confidently addressed the media while concealing his identity behind his customary mask. Consequently, the court issued the following directives regarding the proceedings:
“Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas will testify against Former GFA President Kwasi Nyantakyi in open court but disguised in a mask
"Mr. Nyantakyi will however have the opportunity to see his face in chambers before such testimony."
