Ghana will be one of five African countries representing the continent at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars will compete in Group H of the group stages of the tournament. In that group, Ghana will battle it out with two-time champions Uruguay, as well as European giants Portugal.
The other group opponent is South Korea from Asia.
While the 2022 FIFA World Cup will commence on Sunday, November 20, Ghana’s Black Stars will play their first match on November 24.
Subsequently, Ghana will take on South Korea on November 28 before finishing the group stages campaign with a rematch against Uruguay.
With just days to the start of the tournament, we take a look at five players who could have represented Ghana but will be going to Qatar with different countries.
Memphis Depay – Netherlands
Top on the list is attacker Memphis Depay. The talented attacker is going to Qatar with the Netherlands.
Despite being born in Holland, the FC Barcelona winger is of Ghanaian descent.
Having grown up in the Netherlands and played for the various youth national teams, he later opted to stay true to the country to represent the nation at the senior level.
He is heading to Qatar with the Orange as one of the national team’s key players.
Nico Williams – Spain
Born in Spain to parents who trace their roots to Ghana, Nico Williams is another player who could have easily ended up playing for the Black Stars.
He only last year rose to prominence when he started playing regularly for Athletic Bilbao in Spanish La Liga.
A few months ago, he was contacted by the Ghana FA over the possibility of playing for the Black Stars.
Unlike his big brother Inaki Williams, Nico Williams decided against representing Ghana.
He has now been included in the final 26-man squad of Spain for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
A budding talent who could have helped Ghana in so many ways.
Jeremie Frimpong – Netherlands
The next on the list is Jeremie Frimpong. Not your strongest of defenders but definitely one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe in the last couple of seasons.
Born in the Netherlands, Jeremie Frimpong grew up in England where his Ghanaian parents had moved to at a very young age.
As a result, he could have chosen to play for the Netherlands, England, and Ghana.
In the end, the full-back opted to play for the Netherlands after representing the youth national teams of the country in the past.
Thanks to his outstanding form in the German Bundesliga where he plays for Bayer Leverkusen, Jeremie Frimpong is going to Qatar with the Netherlands.
Mohammed Muntari – Qatar
The host nation, Qatar has a Ghanaian player in their final squad for the world cup. Mohammed Muntari, 28, is the only player on this list with a different story. The attacker unlike the four players was born in Ghana.
He managed to travel to Qatar at a very young age and was convinced to naturalise to play for the country as part of their efforts to get as many quality players in their national team as possible.
It was all part of a grand plan to prepare for the 2022 FIFA World.
Over the years, Mohammed Muntari has played several important key roles for the Maroons. He will now represent the country at the 2022 FIFA World Cup as one of the selected 26 final players on home soil.
Jeremy Doku - Belgium
The final player we will be looking at is Jeremy Doku. The youngster has battled injuries in the past year but remains a fine attacker.
While the form is not there as compared to his first season in France where e terrorized defenders in the French Ligue 1, his quality is not in question.
Also born in Belgium to Ghanaian parents, Jeremy Doku could have represented the Black Stars.
However, when it came down to making the big decision, he followed his heart and opted to play for the Red Devils.
He is now one of the 26 players Belgium is taking to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
