“This smile won’t go off my face for a long time. This gold medal is just insane; I even surprised myself a little with that sprint finish, to be honest. I knew I felt good, but you don’t know how the others feel. I was in front for a long time and knew that if I could get out, I would be in a good position. With 150m to go, I thought: OK, now I have to get out of that group. I have to make that gap, but I can’t gamble on the inside. I went outside, and at 100m I was like: let’s send it, let’s go. I even said to myself, let’s go, and thought, wow, maybe the others even hear me saying that. I had a lot of confidence, though, because I felt I was in great shape. I felt like I could compete as somewhat of an underdog, which probably helped me,” Stefan Nlilessen 1500 m.

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Laura Muir missed out on the 1500m final after finishing eighth in the second heat. “It’s mixed emotions,” said Muir, who finished in 4:09.66. “I’m pleased with how I ran there; I put myself in the best position possible to make the top six. I just had a few setbacks the past few weeks after the Commonwealth Games, where I hurt my ankle, so it was only yesterday it felt great. That was a really competitive round; the girls were so fast, and I had to be at my best to make the final, let alone get on the podium. I gave it my best shot, and I’m proud of that.”

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Race walking events over new half marathon and marathon distances delivered not only inaugural championship records, but also two world and one European records. Also, Paul McGrath in the men’s half marathon race walk clocked the second fastest time by a European of 1:23:23.
BIRMINGHAM (GBR): With the individual men’s sprints program completed, Norway’s Karsten Warholm has already secured a Gold Crown with his superb championships record of 46.63 to win the men’s 400m hurdles. The leading performances across 10 event groups are each awarded a Gold Crown and a performance bonus of €50,000.

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Audrey Werro dominated the ‘race of the champions’ in the 800m ahead of her main rivals Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Broeders-Bol. Her time at the finish line was far from the long-standing world record, but the main goal of Friday’s race was the European title. Now there is another chance to break Jarmila Kratochvílová’s performance, and Werro could attack it again at the Wanda Diamond League meetings on home soil in Lausanne (August 21) and Zurich (August 27). Broeders-Bol is also set to compete in both races, while Hodgkinson’s future plans are not yet known.

BIRMINGHAM (GBR): German team thrilled audiences with strong performances at the European Championships in Birmingham. On Thursday evening, with five German medals, including gold for decathlete Leo Neugebauer and steeplechaser Gesa Krause, 4.64 million television viewers tuned into ZDF’s “ZDFsportstudio live” from Birmingham.
