GLASGOW (GBR, Jul 27): Olympic winner Ethan Katzberg won hammer with Games record 80.97 right in the first attempt in the first athletics evening session at the Commonwealth Games. Silver for young Iosif Kesidis of Cyprus, 76.97. Australian Rose Davies dominated the women’s 10 000 m in 31:39.32. Second was this year’s African champion, Diana Wanza from Kenya, 31:50.13, and in a close fight, Rwandan Florence Niyonkuru 31:55.47 beat Ugandan Esther Chebet for bronze 31:55.70

PB. Men’s high jump confirmed the general crisis of these events, as 225 was enough to win. Jamaican Romaine Beckford beat on countback Sarvesh Anil Kushare from India. Bronze for Kimani Jack 220, after first failure at 225 he tried twice at 228.

Kenyans ruled in the steeple as expected, with 18-year-old World medalist Edmund Serem winning in 8:18.23. He was followed by Simon Koech in 8:18.59 and Leonard Bett in 8:21.63. World champion Geordie Beamish was fourth in 8:24.09. Jamaica won again the 110 m hurdles as Demario Prince clocked 13.17 (+0.4). In a tight fight for silver, Sam Bennett got 13.30 PB, and Milan Trajkovic, at the age of 34 years, won his first medal for Cyprus in this event with 13.32, a season best.
