Mohammed Salisu has opened up on why he delayed accepting to play for the Black Stars of Ghana.

The Southampton defender turned several chances to play for his country during time reign of Kwesi Appiah, CK Akonnor, and Milovan Rajevac.

However, the 23-year-old made his Black Stars debut in September against Brazil and went on to last the entire duration against Nicaragua.

The stalwart center-back has made 14 appearances for Southampton in the Premier League- an outstanding and consistent performance that earned him a spot in the Black Stars' final World Cup.

Speaking to the media, the ex-Real Valladolid man stated he is now ready for the challenge, the reason he finally accepted to play for the national team this time.

"I had a feeling that it was the right time now to represent my country," he said.

"Before, I wasn't ready. I spoke to the coaches and the FA President and they understood me. I told him when I'm ready I will accept the call-up," he added.

Salisu is expected to play a major role in Ghana's participation at the 20222 World Cup in Qatar.

Ghana is housed in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea, and two time world champions Uruguay.
